The Way Of The Cross

I.  JESUS IS CONDEMNED TO DEATH

When Jesus came out wearing the crown of thorns and the purple cloak, Pilate said to them, “Look at the man.” (John 19:5)

Jesus, help me to avoid sin and to refrain from harshly judging others.  Like You, lead me to be more loving, understanding and compassionate toward everyone, especially the least of my sisters and brothers.

II. JESUS CARRIES HIS CROSS

When they had finished mocking him, they stripped him of the purple, dressed him in his own clothes, and led him out to crucify him. (Mark 15:20)

Jesus, help me to grow personally and spiritually when I bear my crosses in my life.  Give me strength to carry the burdens, hardships, pain and disappointments I experience.

III. JESUS FALLS THE FIRST TIME

He was praying that if it were possible, this hour might pass him by.  He kept saying, Father you have the power to do all things.  Take this cup away from me.  But let it be a syou would have it, not as I. (Mark 14:35-36)

Jesus, too often I fail to follow You faithfully.  Please lift me us when I fall, Lord, and teach me to trust in Your gentle, loving care.

IV. JESUS MEETS HIS MOTHER

When Jesus saw his mother and the disciple whom he loved, he said to his mother, “Woman behold your son.” Then he said to the disciple, “Behold your mother.” And from that hour onward the disciple took her into his home. (John 19:26-27)

Jesus, help me to know the great love of our Blessed Mother.  Renew my heart and my spirit through the love You offer me each day, especially by my family and freinds.

V. JESUS IS HELPED BY SIMON

As they led him away, they laid hold of one Simon of Cyrene who was coming in from the fields.  They put a crossbeam on Simon’s shoulder for him to carry along behind Jesus. (Luke 23:26)

Jesus, forgive my insensitivity to the needs of others.  Open my eyes to see You in the less fortunate.  Give me the courage to reachout genereously to all those in need.

VI. VERONICA WIPES THE FACE OF JESUS

He was spurned and avoided by men, a man of suffering, accustomed to infirmity, one of those from whom men hide their faces. (Isaiah 53:3)

Jesus, help me to see Your face today in the poor, the forgotten, the sick and the troubled.  Let me step out in faith, like Veronica, to act, speak and love You in those who are rejected.

VII. JESUS FALLS THE SECOND TIME

It was our infirmities that he bore, our sufferings that he endured.  He was pierced for our offenses, crushed for our sins.  Upon him was the chastisement that makes us whole. (Isaiah 53:4-5)

Jesus, when I lose hope or tend to despair, when failure and disappointment fill my life, help me to know that You are with me.  Help me not to be afraid to begin again.

VIII. JESUS COMFORTS THE WOMEN

A great crowd followed him, including women who beat their breasts and lamented over him, Jesus turned to them and said, “Do not weep for me.  Weep for yourselves and for your children.” (Luke 23: 27-28)

Jesus, hear my cries and grant my prayers.  Fill my heart with Your loving compassion, so I can do my best to relieve the pain of those who have no one to comfort them.

IX. JESUS FALLS THE THIRD TIME

Jesus said, “I solemnly assure you, unless the grain of wheat falls to the earth and dies, it remains just a grain of wheat.  But if it dies, it produces much fruit.” (John 12:23-24)

Jesus, even You succumed when life’s events beat You down.  How much more do I fall and fail in difficult times! Pick me up, Lord, and strengthen my confidence and trust in You.

X. JESUS IS STRIPPED OF HIS GARMENTS

Then they crucified him and divided up his garments by rolling dice for them to see what each should take. (Mark 15:24)

Jesus, too often I cling to material possessions and superficial accomplishments in my attempts to be happy.  Help me let go of all that prevents me from growing closer to You.

XI. JESUS IS NAILED TO THE CROSS

They crucified Jesus and the criminals as well, one on his right and the other on his left.  Then Jesus said “Father forgive them, they know not what they do.” (Luke 23: 33-34)

Jesus, too often I cling to material possessions and superficial accomplishments in my attempts to be happy.  Help me let go of allthat prevents me from growing closer to You.

XII. JESUS DIES ON THE CROSS

Jesus uttered a loud cry and said, “Father, into your hands I commend my spirit.” After he said this, he expired. (Luke 23:45-46)

At that moment the curtain in the sanctuary was torn in two from top to bottom.  The centurion who stood guard over Him, on seeing the manner of his death, declared, “Clearly this man was the SON OF GOD!” (Mark 15:37-39)

Jesus, You have robbed death of its power.  Be with me and my loved ones in the hour of our death, and grant us peace and joy with You and all the saints forever in heaven.

XIII.  JESUS IS TAKEN FROM THE CROSS

Afterward, Joseph of Arimathea asked Pilate if he could remove the body of Jesus.  And Pilate permitted it, so they came and took the body away. (John 19:38)

Jesus, when your lifeless body was taken off the cross, You were totally in the care of others.  Help me to place my life in Your hands, and to bring hope to those who mourn.

XIV. JESUS IS PLACED IN THE TOMB

Taking the body, Joseph (of Arimathea) wrapped it in clean linen and laid it in his own new tomb which had been hewn from rock.  Then he rolled a huge stone across the entrance. (Matt 27:59-60)

Jesus, help me to live each day according to Your virtues and values, so I am prepared at any time for death.  Grant eternal rest and peace to all my loved ones who have died.
