Laughter, Good for the Heart and Soul

We all know that laughter is a good medicine. But how do you make someone laughs? It’s not that easy to humor someone who’s not in the mood for it.

A good laugh, changes blood pressure (blood pressure rises during laughter, but lowers below the starting point afterward), reduces muscle tension, improves digestion and- if you laugh so hard that you cry- releases tears that contain bacteria-killing agents. Research also indicates that laughter may trigger the release of catecholamines, hormones that increase alertness.

Even more important than the physical effects, are the psychological benefits of humor and laughter. Reduction of tension and anxiety is one of the most important.

Laughter improves communications between people. Shared laugter creates community. If you’re trying to create cohesive group in business, with friends or family, laughter can facilitate that sense of belonging. Fear, loneliness, and isolation disappear in shared laughter.

There are so many people in our culture walking around tied up in knots because they won’t give themselves the release of laughter and play, they won’t permit themselves that healing embrace. A common excuse, is, ” I am busy. I am under pressure here. I don’t have time for that stuff.” The truth is, that’s the time when people need it most. Laughter and play is a total life philosophy, not just a good-time philosophy.

How can you add more laughter to your life?
By taking the time for fun and play, by opening your eyes to the humor around you. Here’s how.

Take a laugh break. Force yourself to take a laugh break. Who cares if people walk by and see you laughing for no reason? It only adds to the fun. Or, take a break to browse through humorous books, articles or cartoons that you’ve clipped-anything that makes you laugh.

Develop your comic vision. Getting in the habit of casting a bemused eye on the world around you. Nothing is funnier than the unintended humor of reality. If you practice doing this, humor will be waiting to greet you. Keep your eyes and mind open. We can’t be intentional about humor. We don’t have to leave it to chance.

Find a funny friend. Enlist your own funny friend. Pick someone you think is hysterically funny. Use that person as an internal ally. The next time the going gets rough, ask yourself: “How would this person see this situation I’m in? What would this person do or say if he or she were in my shoes.?”

Delight yourself. Make a point of delighting yourself several times a day. A better expression than ‘sense of humor’ is ‘sense of delight.’ Doing something you know is tremendously hard, and making it look totally effortless. The delight is in the difference between what you perceive and what’s actually happening-that’s fun, it’s so nice to see.

The last laugh should be on you. One simple exercise for not taking yourself seriously is drawing-draw a picture of something that’s causing you stress-but use the wrong hand, or do it with your eyes shut. Inevitably when you open your eyes, you will smile at the results. Strive to take your work seriously but yourself lightly.

Spread the wealth. If good luck happens to you, make good things happen to others. Find ways to share laughter.

A lot of people have grown up learning not to use humor. Parents say, “Wipe that smile off your face,” “Get serious,” “Grow up,” “Act your age.” All this subtle and not-so-subtle messages discourage kids from using humor.

Encourage children to laugh and be spontaneous, and don’t discourage their ideas. Keep funny games and books around the house that both children and adults can enjoy.
