The Beginning Of The Gospel

It began as the prophet Isaiah had written:

“GOD said, ‘ I will send my messenger ahead of you to open the way for you.’

Someone is shouting in the desert, ‘ Get the road ready for the LORD; make a straight path for Him to travel!”

Mark 1: 9-11

Not long afterwards Jesus came from Nazareth in the province of Galilee, and was baptized by John the Baptist in the Jordan.

As soon as Jesus came up out of the water, He saw heaven opening and the Spirit coming down on Him like a dove.

And  a voice came from heaven, “You are my own dear Son, I am pleased with you.”

The Temptation of Jesus

Matthew 4: 1-11

Then the Spirit led Jesus into the desert to be tempted by the Devil.

After spending forty days and nights without food, Jesus was hungry,

Then the Devil came to Him and said, “If you are GOD’s Son, order these stones to turn into bread.”

But Jesus answered, ” The scripture says, ‘ Human beings cannot live on bread alone, but need every word that GOD speaks.'”

Then the Devil took Jesus to Jerusalem, the Holy city, set Him on the highest point of the Temple, and said to Him, ” If you are GOD’s Son, throw yourself down, for the scripture says, ‘ GOD will give orders to His angels about you; they will hold you up with their hands, so that not even your feet will be hurt on the stones.'”

Jesus answered, ” But the scripture also says, ‘ Do not put the LORD your GOD to the test.'”

Then the Devil took Jesus to a very high mountain and showed Him all the kingdom of the world in all their greatness.

“All this I will give you,” the Devil said, ” if you kneel down and worship me.”

Then Jesus answered, ” Go away, Satan! The scripture says, ‘ Worship the LORD your GOD and serve Him only!”

Then the Devil left Jesus; and angels came to helped Him.

Jesus begins His work in Galilee

Luke 4: 1-19

Then Jesus returned to Galilee, and the power of the Holy Spirit was with Him.  The news about Him spread throughout all that territory.

He taught in the synagogue and was praised by everyone.

Then Jesus went to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, and on the Sabbath He went to the synagogue.

From the book of the prophet Isaiah, Jesus read:

“The Spirit of the LORD is upon me, because He has chosen me to bring good news to the poor.

He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to set free the oppressed and announce that the time has come when the LORD will save His people.”

Luke 4:21

Jesus said to the people at the synagogue, “This passage of scripture has come true today, as you heard it being read.”

The people of Nazareth was angry and rejected Jesus.

Luke 4: 28-30

They dragged Jesus out of town, and took Him to the top of the hill.  They meant to throw Him over the cliff, but Jesus walked through the middle of the crowd and went His way.

Mark 1: 14-15

In Capernaum a town in Galilee, Jesus preached the Good News from GOD.

“The right time has come and the kingdom of GOD is near! Turn away from your sins and believe the Good News.”

Mark 1: 23-26

Just then a man with an evil spirit came into the synagogue and screamed, ” What do you want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Are you here to destroy us? I know who you are- you are GOD’s holy messenger!”

Jesus ordered the spirit, “Be quiet, and come out of the man!”

The evil spirit shook the man hard, gave a loud scream, and came out of him.

And so the news about Jesus spread quickly everywhere in the province of Galilee.

Matthew 5: 3-10

True Happiness

Happy are those who know they are spiritually poor; the kingdom of heaven belongs to them!

Happy are those who mourn; GOD will comfort them!

Happy are those who are humble; they will receive what GOD has promised!

Happy are those whose greatest desire is to do what GOD requires; GOD will satisfy them fully!

Happy are those who are merciful to others; GOD will be merciful to them!

Happy are the pure in heart; they will see GOD!

Happy are those who work for peace; GOD will call them His children!

Happy are those who are persecuted because they do what GOD requires; the Kingdom of heaven belongs to them!

Amen.
