Key Terms on Understanding the Person Receiving Care

1. Body language – facial expressions, gestures, posture, and body movements that send messages to others.
2. Culture – the language, values, beliefs, habits, likes, dislikes, customs, and characteristics of a group that passed from one generation to the next.
3. Esteem – the worth, value, or opinion one has of a person.
4. Geriatrics – the branch of medicine concerned with the problems and diseases of old age and older persons.
5. Holism- a concept that considers the whole person; the whole person has physical, social, psychological, and spiritual parts that are woven together and cannot be separated.
6. Need- that which is necessary or desirable for maintaining life and well-being.
7. Nonverbal communication – communication that does not involve words.
8. Obstetrics- the branch of medicine concerned with the care of women during pregnancy, labor, and childbirth and for the 6-8 weeks after birth.
9. Paraphrasing – restating the person’s message in your own words.
10. Pediatrics – the branch of Medicine concerned with the growth, development, and care of children ranging in age from the newborn to the adolescent.
11. Psychiatry – the branch of medicine concerned with the diagnois and treatment of people with mental health problems.
12. Religion -spiritual beliefs, needs, and practices.
13. Self-actualization – exeriencing one’s potential.
14. Self-esteem – thnking well of yourself and being thought well of by others.
15. Verbal communication – communication that uses the written or spoken word.

Mental Health Problems:
1. Affect – feelings and emotions
2. Anxiety – a vague uneasy feeling that occurs in response to stress.
3. Compulsion – the uncontrolled performance of an act.
4. Conscious – awareness of the environment and experiences; the person knows what is happening and can control thoughts and behavior.
5. Defense Mechanisms – an unconscious reaction that blocks unpleasant or threatening feelings.
6. Delusion – a false belief.
7. Delusion of grandeur – an exaggerated belief about one’s own importance, wealth, power, or talents.
8. Ego – that part of the personality dealing with reality; deals with thoughts, feelings, good sense, and problem solving.
9. Emotional illness – mental illness, mental disorder, psychiatric disorder.
10. Hallucination – seeing, hearing, or feeling something that is not real.
11. Id – the part of the personality at the unconscious level; concerned with pleasure.
12. Mental – relating to the mind; something that exists in the mind or is performed by the mind.
13. Mental disorder – mental illness; emotional disorder, psychiatric disorder.
14. Mental Health – a state of mind in which the person copes with and adjust to the stresses of everyday living in ways accepted by society.
15. Mental illness- a disturbance in the person’s ability to cope or adjust to stress; behavior and functioning are impaired; mental disorders, emotional illness, psychiatric disorder.
16. Obsession – a persistent thought or idea.
l7. Panic – an intense and sudden feeling of fear, anxiety, terror, or dread.
18. Paranoia – a disorder of the mind; false beliefs and suspicion about a person or situation.
11. Personality – the set of attitudes, values, behaviors and traits of a particular person.
12. Phobia – fear, panic, or dread.
13. Psychiatric dsorder- mental illness, mental disorder, emotional disorder.
14. Psychosis – a serious mental disorder; the person does not view or interpret reality correctly.
15. Schizophrenia – split mind.
16. Stress- the response or change in the body caused by any emotional, physical, social or economic factor.
17. Stressor – any emotional physical, social, or economic factor that causes stress.
18. Subconscious – memory, past experiences, and thoughts of which the person is not aware; they are easily recalled.
19. Superego – the part of the personality concerned with what is right and wrong.
20. Unconscious – experiences and feelings that cannot be remembered.
